Why Your Contractor Website Isn't Generating Leads (And How to Fix It)

Getting traffic but no calls? Here are the 7 most common reasons Oregon contractor websites fail to convert visitors into leads — and the fixes that work.

You invested in a website. Maybe you even invested in SEO and you're getting traffic. But the phone isn't ringing. The contact form isn't filling up. You're watching visitors arrive and leave without ever becoming leads. This is one of the most frustrating situations in contractor marketing — and it's more common than you might think.

After building over 150 contractor websites in Oregon, we've identified the seven most common reasons contractor websites fail to convert visitors into leads. If your website has any of these problems, fixing them can dramatically increase your lead volume — often without spending another dollar on traffic.

Problem 1: Your Phone Number Isn't Prominent Enough

This sounds obvious, but it's the #1 conversion killer we see on contractor websites. Your phone number should be visible in the top-right corner of every page, large enough to read at a glance, and clickable on mobile. If a visitor has to hunt for your phone number, most of them won't bother.

TIP

Fix: Place your phone number in the top-right of your header in a font size of at least 18px. Make it a clickable tel: link on mobile. Add a sticky 'Call Now' button that follows the user as they scroll.

Problem 2: Your Website Loads Too Slowly on Mobile

Over 70% of contractor searches happen on mobile devices. Google's research shows that 53% of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes more than 3 seconds to load. If your website takes 5, 7, or 10 seconds to load on mobile — and many contractor websites do — you're losing more than half your potential leads before they even see your content.

Common causes of slow mobile load times:

  • Uncompressed images (the #1 cause — a single 5MB photo can tank your load time)
  • Cheap shared hosting that can't handle traffic spikes
  • Outdated WordPress themes with excessive JavaScript
  • Too many plugins running on every page
  • No browser caching or CDN configured

Problem 3: No Clear Value Proposition Above the Fold

When a visitor lands on your homepage, they make a decision within 3 seconds: 'Is this the right business for me?' If your hero section doesn't immediately answer 'What do you do?', 'Where do you serve?', and 'Why should I choose you?', they'll hit the back button and call your competitor.

TIP

Fix: Your hero headline should answer all three questions in one sentence. Example: 'Eugene's Most Trusted Plumber — Licensed, Insured, and Available 24/7.' Then add a prominent CTA button: 'Call Now' or 'Get a Free Estimate'.

Problem 4: No Social Proof (Or Buried Social Proof)

93% of consumers say online reviews influence their hiring decisions. If your website doesn't prominently display your Google reviews, star rating, and number of reviews, you're leaving your most powerful trust signal off the table. Worse, if you have great reviews on Google but they're not on your website, visitors who don't check Google will never see them.

Problem 5: Your Contact Form Has Too Many Fields

Every additional field in your contact form reduces conversion rates. A form asking for name, email, phone, address, service type, preferred date, and how they heard about you will convert far fewer leads than a form asking for name, phone, and service needed. Start with the minimum information you need to follow up, and gather the rest when you call.

Problem 6: No Emergency or Urgency Messaging

For trades like plumbing, HVAC, and electrical, many customers are in emergency situations. They need help NOW. If your website doesn't communicate that you offer emergency service, fast response times, and same-day availability, emergency customers will call someone who does.

Problem 7: Your Website Isn't Optimized for Local Search

A beautiful website that nobody can find is worthless. If your website doesn't have location-specific service pages, proper title tags mentioning your city, and schema markup identifying your service area, you're invisible to the majority of local searches. SEO and website design must work together from day one.
