Google Analytics for Contractors: What to Track and Why

Randy Bett — Digital Marketing Strategist 2025-03-05 4 min read

Google Analytics tells you exactly where your leads come from. Here is how Oregon contractors use it to make smarter marketing decisions.

Google Analytics is the most powerful free marketing tool available to Oregon contractors — and one of the most underused. Most contractors either have not installed it, installed it but never look at it, or look at it occasionally without knowing which numbers actually matter for their business. Google Analytics tells you exactly where your website visitors come from, which pages they visit, how long they stay, and whether they convert into leads. This data is the foundation of every smart marketing decision: it tells you which channels are generating leads, which pages are losing visitors, and where to invest more or less of your marketing budget.

Setting Up Google Analytics 4 for Your Contractor Website

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the current version of Google Analytics, having replaced Universal Analytics in 2023. Setting up GA4 requires creating a Google Analytics account, creating a GA4 property for your website, and installing the tracking code on every page of your website. For WordPress websites, the Google Site Kit plugin installs GA4 with a few clicks. For custom websites, the tracking code must be added manually or through Google Tag Manager. After installation, configure conversion events — the specific actions that count as a lead on your website. For contractors, the most important conversion events are: phone number clicks (tracked via click event tracking), form submissions (tracked via thank-you page or form submission event), and chat initiations. Without conversion tracking, you can see how many visitors your website receives but not how many of them become leads.

The Metrics That Actually Matter for Oregon Contractors

Google Analytics provides hundreds of metrics, but Oregon contractors need to focus on a small set of high-signal numbers. Users (the number of unique visitors to your website) tells you the overall reach of your marketing. Sessions by channel (how many visits came from organic search, paid ads, social media, direct, and referral) tells you which marketing channels are driving traffic. Conversion rate (the percentage of visitors who complete a conversion event) tells you how effectively your website turns visitors into leads. Conversions by channel tells you which marketing channels are generating leads, not just traffic. And average session duration and pages per session tell you how engaged your visitors are with your content. These six metrics, reviewed monthly, give you a complete picture of your marketing performance.

Using Analytics to Optimize Your Marketing Spend

The most valuable use of Google Analytics for Oregon contractors is optimizing marketing spend based on actual lead attribution data. If your Analytics data shows that organic search generates 60% of your leads while paid social generates 10%, you should be investing proportionally more in SEO and less in social advertising. If a specific service page has a high traffic volume but a low conversion rate, it needs conversion rate optimization — better headlines, clearer calls to action, or more compelling trust signals. If a blog post is generating significant organic traffic but few leads, consider adding a stronger call to action or a lead magnet to capture that traffic. Data-driven marketing decisions consistently outperform intuition-based decisions, and Google Analytics provides the data.

Connecting Google Analytics to Google Search Console

Linking Google Analytics to Google Search Console (GSC) provides a more complete picture of your organic search performance. GSC shows you which keywords your website ranks for, how many impressions and clicks each keyword generates, and your average ranking position for each keyword. When combined with GA4's conversion data, you can see not just which keywords drive traffic but which keywords drive leads. This is a critical distinction: a keyword that drives 500 monthly visitors but zero leads is less valuable than a keyword that drives 50 monthly visitors and 10 leads. Prioritize your SEO efforts around the keywords that drive converting traffic, not just traffic volume.

Monthly Analytics Review: A Framework for Oregon Contractors

Set aside 30 minutes at the beginning of each month to review your Google Analytics data. Compare this month's users, sessions, and conversions to the previous month and to the same month last year (to account for seasonal variation). Identify your top five traffic sources and note any significant changes. Review your top five pages by traffic and conversion rate. Check your mobile vs. desktop split and ensure your mobile conversion rate is not significantly lower than desktop (if it is, your mobile experience needs improvement). Document your findings and identify one or two specific actions to take based on the data. This monthly review habit, maintained consistently, is one of the highest-ROI activities an Oregon contractor can do to improve their marketing performance over time.
